Mid-weight towels from about 450 to 550 GSM are the common choice for everyday bath towels, offering a good balance of softness, absorbency and drying time. Heavy towels from 600 to 700 GSM feel plush and luxurious and are popular with hotels and premium retailers, although they take longer to dry. Yarn and weaving matter as much as weight: ring-spun and zero-twist yarns feel softer, while longer loops add absorbency.
