It depends on where you sell. In the United States, children’s products for ages 12 and under need third-party testing at a CPSC-accepted laboratory for lead and phthalates, compliance with flammability rules, permanent tracking labels, and a Children’s Product Certificate issued by the importer. In the European Union and the United Kingdom, clothing must meet REACH limits on restricted substances, and children’s garments must follow EN 14682, which limits cords and drawstrings, alongside general product safety duties. Many retailers in both markets also ask for OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 in product class I, the strictest class, which covers babies. Small parts such as snaps and buttons need secure attachment and pull testing. Small parts are a choking hazard, so attachment is controlled at several stages rather than checked only at the end. We choose nickel-free snaps and trims from suppliers who provide test data, and set attachment machines to the manufacturer’s specifications for the fabric thickness. Pull tests are carried out on samples to confirm snaps and buttons withstand the required force, then repeated during production at regular intervals, particularly at the start of each shift and whenever a machine is adjusted. Sewn-on buttons are checked for stitch security, and designs avoid decorative small parts wherever possible. Finished babywear passes through a metal detector before packing to catch broken needles or stray metal. Where your market or retailer requires it, attachment strength is also tested at an accredited laboratory, and the reports are shared with your order.
