Garment factories in Gazipur

If you have ever worn a Bangladeshi t-shirt or hoodie, there is a good chance it was made in Gazipur. Running north from Tongi through Board Bazar, Konabari, Kaliakoir and Sreepur, this is where the industry’s scale sits, and where the newest, largest and greenest factories tend to be built.

Why composite mills matter to you

Gazipur’s defining feature is the composite mill: a single site that knits the fabric, dyes it, cuts it and sews it. Compare that with a supply chain where fabric is knitted in one place, dyed in another and sewn in a third, and the difference shows up in two numbers that decide whether your delivery date holds.

The first is lead time. Every transfer between companies adds days of waiting, transport and inspection, and those days are the easiest ones to lose. The second is accountability. When a shade fails or a fabric fault appears, a composite mill owns the whole chain, so the fix happens internally rather than across three sets of lawyers. For repeat programmes, that is the difference between a supplier who solves problems and one who explains them.

Scale, and what it means for a smaller brand

The honest side of scale is that a factory built to run tens of thousands of pieces a week does not want a 500-piece order, and if it takes one, it will not give it proper attention. This is where a buying house earns its place: we match your quantity to a factory that genuinely wants it, rather than pushing a small order into a big line where it becomes an inconvenience.

It also means Gazipur is where capacity lives when you need to scale. A brand that outgrows its first factory usually moves into this belt, and planning that step early, while you are still small, is far easier than doing it in a hurry when a retailer places an order you cannot fill.

Where the green factories are

Bangladesh had 284 LEED-certified garment factories as of May 2026, 121 of them at Platinum level, rated by the US Green Building Council on energy, water, materials and indoor environment. A significant share of them are new builds in this belt, because certification is far easier to design into a new factory than to retrofit into an old one.

If environmental performance is part of your brand’s story, ask for a factory you can look up in the USGBC project directory by name. It is a claim you can verify in a minute, which under the EU’s new rules on environmental claims is the only kind worth making.

The traffic problem, stated plainly

Gazipur is close to Dhaka in kilometres and far from it in hours. The same journey can take one hour or three depending on the day and the time you set off, and the road to Chattogram adds several hundred kilometres more.

This is why we treat inland transport as a scheduled stage with its own buffer rather than a detail at the end. Most missed sailings we see in this industry are not caused by the sewing line; they are caused by a truck that left a day late.

Producing in Gazipur: common questions.

What is a composite factory, and why should I care?

A composite factory does several production stages on one site: typically knitting the fabric, dyeing it, then cutting and sewing the garment, and often printing and embroidery as well. The alternative is a chain of separate companies, where fabric is knitted by one business, dyed by another and sewn by a third. Two things change when it is all under one roof. Lead time shortens, because every transfer between companies adds days of transport, waiting and incoming inspection, and those are the days most often lost. Accountability improves, because when a shade is off or a fabric fault appears mid-run, one company owns the whole problem and fixes it internally instead of arguing about whose fault it was. For repeat programmes with tight delivery dates, composite production is usually the safer structure, and Gazipur is where most of Bangladesh’s composite knit capacity sits.

Will a large Gazipur factory take my small order?

Usually not on good terms, and you should be wary of one that says yes too easily. A factory built to run tens of thousands of pieces a week loses money changing its lines over for a few hundred, so a small order placed there tends to get whatever attention is left after the big ones, which shows up as slipping dates and inconsistent quality. That is the real risk, not the price. Our job is to place your order where the quantity is welcome: a mid-size unit that treats your run as a proper order rather than a favour, or for genuinely small quantities our named partner Collective Studio Ltd. in Narayanganj, from 100 pieces per style and colour. As you grow, the Gazipur belt is where the capacity is waiting, and moving up is much easier when it is planned rather than rushed.
