Clothing manufacturer in Bangladesh for Portuguese brands
Portugal is unusual among our markets because it is a clothing producer as well as a buyer, with a respected industry of its own in the north. So Portuguese brands rarely ask whether Bangladesh is possible; they ask which parts of their range belong in Bangladesh and which belong at home. That is the right question, and this page tries to answer it honestly.

Bangladesh or Portugal? Usually both
Portugal’s own industry is close, fast and skilled, which makes it strong for short runs, quick replenishment and products you need to adjust mid-season. Bangladesh is strongest on volume: basics and core styles ordered in quantity, where scale in knitting, dyeing and sewing brings the unit cost down and a longer lead time is acceptable because the style does not change.
The brands we see doing this well split the range deliberately. Core tees, sweats, polos and uniform lines that sell season after season go to Bangladesh; trend pieces, small capsules and anything that needs a fast repeat stay close to home. Deciding the split by product rather than by habit is where the margin is, and we are happy to tell you when a style belongs in Portugal rather than with us.
- Bangladesh: core styles in volume, predictable repeats, cotton knitwear at scale
- Portugal: short runs, fast replenishment, mid-season changes
- Plan the Bangladesh share on a longer calendar, with sea freight
- Keep the sealed sample standard the same, whichever factory makes it
- Compare landed cost, not ex-factory price, when deciding the split
Labels in Portuguese
A garment sold in Portugal carries its fibre composition in Portuguese, using the approved fibre names and accurate percentages — the EU labelling regulation ties the language to the country of sale, not to where the garment was made.
Brands selling in both Portugal and Spain often print a combined Portuguese and Spanish label. We check the composition against the fabric test report before bulk labels are printed, and confirm the finished label on the pre-production sample.
Packaging: the SIGRE system
Portugal manages packaging waste through an integrated system, SIGRE, first licensed in 1997 through Sociedade Ponto Verde. Today the regime sits under Decree-Law 152-D/2017, which unified the management of specific waste streams subject to extended producer responsibility, and the licensed management entities include Sociedade Ponto Verde, Novo Verde and Electrão. The environment agency, APA, oversees the system.
For a clothing importer, the packaging concerned is polybags, hang tags, tissue, mailing bags and cartons. Establish whether you or your Portuguese distributor is the producer for these purposes, join a licensed entity if it is you, and record packaging weights by material per style so declarations are accurate.
Shipping and landed cost
Portuguese orders ship by sea from Chattogram to Lisbon, Leixões or Sines, usually transhipping in the Mediterranean, with air freight from Dhaka for urgent drops.
With duty at zero while EBA holds, landed cost is goods, freight, insurance, clearance and VAT. Because the comparison that matters in Portugal is often against local production, compare landed cost including freight and the longer lead time against the local price — our landed cost calculator is built for exactly that comparison.

Questions from buyers in Portugal.
Should a Portuguese brand produce in Bangladesh or at home?
Usually both, split by product rather than by habit. Portugal’s own garment industry is close, fast and skilled, which makes it the better choice for short runs, quick replenishment and styles you may need to change mid-season. Bangladesh wins on volume: core styles ordered in quantity, where scale in knitting, dyeing and sewing brings the unit cost down, and where a longer sea-freight calendar is acceptable because the style repeats. The brands that get this right put their season-after-season basics — tees, sweats, polos, uniform lines — into Bangladesh, and keep trend pieces and fast repeats close to home. Compare landed cost rather than ex-factory price when you decide, because freight, lead time and minimum quantities all change the answer. We will tell you plainly when a style belongs in Portugal rather than with us; that honesty is worth more to both of us than one mis-placed order.
What packaging rules apply when I import clothing into Portugal?
Portugal manages packaging waste through SIGRE, its integrated packaging waste management system, first licensed in 1997 through Sociedade Ponto Verde and now governed by Decree-Law 152-D/2017, which unified extended producer responsibility for specific waste streams. The licensed management entities include Sociedade Ponto Verde, Novo Verde and Electrão, with the environment agency, APA, overseeing the system. For a clothing importer, the packaging in question is polybags, hang tags, tissue, mailing bags and cartons. The first step is to establish who counts as the producer for your goods — you, or your Portuguese distributor — and if it is you, join a licensed entity and declare packaging by material. On top of that, the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation has applied since 12 August 2026. We record packaging weights by material for every style, so your declarations reflect what was actually shipped.
